American model, television personality, and author Chrissy Teigen announced Sunday that she is stepping away from Twitter.
She’s placing a privacy lock on her account following criticism from fellow food writer Alison Roman in an interview on May 7th.
Roman, the author of “Nothing Fancy,” sat down with New Consumer and said this about Teigen’s growing cooking empire.
Like, what Chrissy Teigen has done is so crazy to me. She had a successful cookbook. And then it was like: Boom, line at Target. Boom, now she has an Instagram page that has over a million followers where it’s just, like, people running a content farm for her. That horrifies me, and it’s not something that I ever want to do. I don’t aspire to that. But like, who’s laughing now? Because she’s making a ton of fucking money.
I’m more interested in expanding myself as a writer. My next book is going to be narrative nonfiction — essays and short stories and stuff.
Teigen responded on Twitter via her now-private account, but Vulture reports that the model tweeted this in a thread on Friday before making her account private:
This is a huge bummer and hit me hard, I have made her recipes for years now, bought the cookbooks, supported her on social, and praised her in interviews. I even signed on to executive produce the very show she talks about doing in this article.
In a time when the sports world has shuttered its doors, this is easily the most exciting come-from-behind victory of the year.
Alison Roman Pulls Off The Massive Upset
The apparent bullying Teigen says she suffered at the hands of Twitter users is reprehensible (especially the stuff about her kids, don’t go after someone’s kids, people). But if you look at the Roman vs. Teigen drama, the underdog win for Roman is highly impressive.
Let’s compare these two celebrities to appreciate this upset victory properly. Roman has 66,500 Twitter followers and 565,000 on Instagram. She is the author of a New York Times bestseller and has sold a television cooking show. Not too shabby.
But in the other corner, we have Teigen. She has 12.7 million followers on Twitter and 29.5 million on Instagram. She kicked her modeling career into high gear ten years ago by landing the cover of Sports Illustrated, followed by the covers of Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and many others.
She started a swimwear line and starred in several television shows. When she decided to take on cooking, she wrote a book, which immediately led to the launch of a cookware line at Target. She’s also a notoriously feisty Twitter user. And that’s just the cliff notes.
But the critique of what appears to be a jealous chef, buried at the bottom of an article, took Teigen off Twitter. Wow. What a flex.
It feels like the Golden State Warriors coming back to beat Oklahoma City Thunder after going down 3-1 in the 2016 Western Conference Finals. It’s like the New England Patriots storming back in the second half of Super Bowl LI, after trailing 28-3. It’s like Pusha T dominating Drake, by announcing Drake’s son to the world and sidelining his Adidas shoe line.
Chrissy Teigen Is Down For the Count
Roman voiced displeasure at the ease with which Chrissy Teigen consistently found success, and it instantly sunk the multi-millionaire’s ship —driving her away from conflict and social media.
The response to Roman’s comments seemed to go beyond what she anticipated, leading to a weird and half-hearted apology on Twitter:
Evidently, Roman can champion anyone she wants on social media; the gloves are on.
